cq WPX SSB - March 2000

GX6YB - Multi-op Single

1st in the UK
2nd in Europe
6th in the World

This was the contest group's first attempt at a 48 hour contest for 4 years.  We decided to try a new site right on the edge of a 400ft hill.  What a site it turned out to be !  Conditions were good that weekend, but the signal reports showed that this site near Bath was outstanding.

Competition keeps getting tougher in this one !   Despite 2802 QSOs and 8,610,840 points we came 4th this year (3rd expedition station).  For the second time we were based in the Isle of Wight.

cq WW DX - Oct 2000

Despite the worst storms in 13 years we managed a creditable 4609 QSOs (48hrs) and 6,206,673 points.

G6YB/P - September 2000

1st in Open Section

Once again the excellent takeoff from our site was our greatest asset. We are quite sure 20m was closed at some time during the night for most other stations, but we were able to work into North America all night. To quote one W7: "What are you guys using ? You're 10dB over S9 and we can only hear one other G who's running around S3." It's amazing what a bit of height and sloping ground can do.

So the problem became, how much time to spend on the LF bands ? Having got fed up of the noise on LF in previous years Neil, M0AXF, built some beverages to use on 80m and 40m. Unfortunately conditions on LF didn't seem great - only a few North Americans worked on 80m, and of course Carlos, TI4CF, was his normal booming signal.

An aurora before the contest made things a bit shaky on the HF bands at first. Luckily things started to improve as the contest went on. 10m opened well enough around 9am sunday morning to be able to spend a little time there, but the rest of the time it was a case of spotting the occassional mult on the band.
